This is the most common test performed for the detection of Hepatitis B antibodies. Its presence indicates previous exposure to Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), but the virus is no longer present and the person cannot pass on the virus to others. The antibody also protects from future HBV infection. In addition to exposure to HBV, the antibodies can also be acquired from successful vaccination. This test is done to determine the need for vaccination (if anti-HBs is absent), or to assess successful vaccination or following an active infection.
