Chemokine receptor 5 is a protein on the surface of T cells, macrophages and dendritic cells and naturally binds to chemokines RANTES and MIP1 alpha and beta which are involved in facilitating movement of cells to points of inflammation. HIV has evolved to use CCR5 along with the CD4 receptor to bind to and enter activated T cells and macrophages.
