Refers to cell surface antigens (Ag) that are useful in discriminating between different cell types. The cell-surface molecule is designated CD followed by a number (e.g. CD3, CD4,CD8 etc). Each CD molecule has a specific function, many of which are known and well over 200 have been classified on human cells.
